The US Department of Defense (DoD) is looking to work more closely with the commercial space sector to take advantage of the rapid innovation being produced by companies. The new effort will be led by Lindsay Millard, principal director for space within the office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering. Heidi Shyu, the under secretary, praised the commercial space sector for its risk taking and said her office wants the “early and often adoption” of commercial capabilities across multiple areas including intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, rapid launch into space, satellite communications, space situational awareness and other potential areas.
