General B. Chance Saltzman, Chief of Space Operations for the United States Space Force, has called for a shake-up of the US military’s approach to space. Speaking at the Space Symposium in Colorado Springs, Saltzman expressed concern about complacency in the industry, warning that tried and tested methods may not be sufficient to address new challenges. He cited the need to contend with space-enabled attacks, including anti-satellite weapons and cyber attacks, and called for old processes and procedures to be dismantled. Saltzman also stressed the importance of commercial players in the industry, but noted that added expectations come with the nature of risk associated with military missions.
