A Memorandum of Intent to address environmental challenges in snow sports – ESA Commercialisation Gateway

During the ESA Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) “Towards a space-powered economy” conference, the European Space Agency (ESA) and the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) signed a Memorandum of Intent to develop and implement space technologies to address environmental challenges and enhance sustainability in snow sports through space applications.

The collaboration aims to mitigate the environmental impact of major sporting events by preventing deforestation, fighting climate change, protecting biodiversity, reducing pollution and carbon emissions, and promoting the circular economy.

ESA and FIS will outline their first joint activities under the collaboration agreement in the coming weeks, with a funding opportunity opening in February 2025. The Memorandum of Intent also anticipates future applications of space technology in areas such as athlete performance, safety and security around events, and recreational snow sports experiences. This collaboration is part of ESA’s broader efforts in sports and events-related initiatives, which include projects on inclusivity in sports, safety and security at major events, and traffic and crowd management.
